Mid-Century Modern Makeover

The house is a mid-century, Frank Lloyd Wright – inspired building. Designed with linear brick and stonework, slate, and wood, the one-story dwelling evokes the classic designs of the famous architect. Because Wright did not spend much design time on kitchens as those were the domain of servants, and this kitchen is used by a chef in the 21st century, the design needed to be new, but echo the lines of the past. A linear slate backsplash reflects the brick outside the house and in the living room off the kitchen, as well as the slate foyer. Warm sapele wood picks up from the original mahogany used in the dining room. A wood floor was added to the kitchen to match the dining room floor next to the kitchen. Open shelving creates the feeling of an open space in a small kitchen, as well as taking care of the issue of upper cabinets built against the window. A honed granite countertop complements the backsplash, but does not overwhelm the slate.
